Giant displays "will create best sports experience"
Visitors to the Lucas Oil sports stadium, which opens in Indianapolis, Indiana later this year, will encounter one of the most advanced giant signage systems in the world.
The $11m system, which should be completed by this summer, aims to give fans of the Indianapolis Colts football team the best sports experience in North America, according to Tom Zupancic, the team’s senior VP of sales and marketing.
The system will carry TV programming, as well as high-definition graphics, to give stadium visitors a wide range of real-time statistics about the game in progress. “The boards will have the ability to portray every available statistic and advertisement, but our goal is to give the fans a clean, crisp high-definition view of the action on the field,” Zupancic explained.
Two large scoreboards, which will be sited in the northwest and southeast corners of the stadium, will each measure approximately 97 feet wide by 53 feet high. Each will incorporate a large video board – 97 feet wide by 37 feet high – and two smaller full-colour digital displays measuring 24 feet wide by 16 feet high.
Installation has been tendered out to Daktronics, which says that its HD-X technology and its control system will allow for complete flexibility in programming. The firm claims that the primary video boards can serve as single giant displays or be divided into multiple zones to show a wide variety of statistics, information, graphics, animation and live plus recorded video. Each of the main scoreboards will also include dedicated space for the use of corporate sponsors, as well as stadium-identification signage.
In addition to the two main scoreboards, Lucas Oil Stadium will feature a nearly-360-degree configuration of full-colour LED technology surrounding the seating bowl. The ribbon board will measure an astonishing 1700 feet wide by three feet high.
