If you’re in the business of specifying screens for digital out-of-home, and you’re trying to get a handle on the slippery question of which numbers really matter in manufacturers’ specifications and what, exactly, they mean...life may soon get a bit easier, thanks to the International Committee for Display Metrology at the Society for Information Display.
The committee has produced a massive (more than 500-page) document setting out its new International Display Measurement Standard (IDMS), which it calls “the most comprehensive display measurement standard yet produced”.
This is not a prescriptive specification with which screens will have to comply – as the authors put it, “we avoid setting any performance criteria or performance minima” – but a detailed description of exactly how they should be tested and measured, covering technologies such as 3D, touchscreens, and front projection as well as flat-panel displays.
