Bally buys CoolSign casino business

Casino giant Bally Technologies has acquired the gaming business of Planar Systems’ CoolSign division.

The deal, for an undisclosed amount, will see Bally integrate the CoolSign technology with its iView Display Manager, a system that lets casinos display networked messaging to players of slot machines, both on the screens of the machines themselves and on overhead displays.

CoolSign – which Planar, originally a display specialist, itself acquired from Clarity Visual Systems in 2006 – will become part of Bally’s Networked Floor of the Future platform, which combines its own technologies with those of partners such as Cisco.

And adding CoolSign to the Bally portfolio will not only give it an instant installed base for digital signage in the shape of Planar’s existing 160-odd casino customers. Given Bally’s strong presence in the gaming industry, it will also likely mean that CoolSign becomes the de facto standard for casino digital signage.

Planar keeps the right to sell CoolSign into markets other than gaming.
