Wireless Ronin blames economy for 35 layoffs
U.S. digital-signage software firm Wireless Ronin Technologies yesterday laid off a fifth of its workforce, citing a “sluggish economy”.
The company, which markets the RoninCast system, has shed 35 employees and contractors accounting for about 22 percent of its head count. After the departures, Wireless Ronin has 125 staff.

Ex-CBS boss opens sales house for UK independents
The former international CEO of CBS Outdoor has launched a sales house to represent independent UK digital out-of-home firms.
Joining Tom Goddard (pictured) at new company Digicom are Ralph Ahern, formerly commercial director at outdoor firm Titan, and Tim Butler, formerly CTO at CBS Outdoor.
Meanwhile, CBS Outdoor in the UK has established a retail sales division to manage the advertising contract it holds at the giant new 
What crunch? Pixman, EnQii raise $25m
Despite the rapid drying-up of bank and private finance, Canada’s Pixman Nomadic Media and UK-based EnQii have between them succeeded in raising $25m to fund continued growth.
Wearable-media specialist Pixman has raised more than CAD7.6m ($7m) through private placements, while the UK’s Amadeus Capital Partners and Wellington Partners have jointly invested $18m in EnQii’s series B financing round.

Focus Enhancements goes into Chapter 11
Technology supplier Focus Enhancements has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the U.S. and been de-listed by the NASDAQ.
The company, which was traded under the ticker symbol FCSE, markets a number of AV and digital-media products such as media players for applications including digital signage.
Focus’s troubles appear to have come to a head on 15 September, when the NASDAQ exchange notified the company that its

Gannett-owned Captivate Network is the latest digital-signage operator to integrate out-of-home and Web content.
The company is repositioning its Website as a consumer-facing service with news and blog content to complement the programming (pictured) that appears on Captivate’s screens in office-building elevators.

Amscreen prepares to launch; Simon Sugar at the helm
Sir Alan Sugar’s son Simon will head the new out-of-home digital-signage division of Amshold set to be launched in the UK next month, despite rumours that Lee McQueen, the winner of this year’s The Apprentice BBC programme, was to take the role.
To be known as Amscreen, the division will launch with the promotional tag of “Your Media in Real Time”, pitching its services at the British market.
